Old Hollinside - Process Breakdown

Old Hollinside is a 13th century fortified manor house ruin in North East England.
I encountered it during a hike in the area and decided to recreate it in Unreal Engine 5 using a modular approach.

My intention was to strike a balance between faithful representation and an efficient modular approach.

I started by gathering and studying as many reference materials as possible, in addition to my own photographs.

I gained a basic understanding of medieval first-floor style architecture and followed real-world scale and proportions.

I blocked out the ruins in Blender while planning ahead for modularity.

I used a combination of basic blocks (displaced with Megascans textures) and ruin pieces generated from photos on Meshy.
I intentionally mixed and matched different stonework types to create variation as seen in the reference.

I used an AI 3D generator to speed up my workflow, as an alternative to photogrammetry using only a limited number of photos.

Decals added the necessary colour variation to masonry and told its story (for example, a red stain where a fireplace used to be).

For everything else (foliage, the bench 'easter egg' etc), I mainly sourced Megascans assets from Fab.
